Now, it's your turn!

Here's your writing assignment for the day:

Anyone feel sorry for Hester Prynne?

-or-

Do you think she deserved the punishment she received?

Hester Prynne is not the only person to has felt isolation and/or alienation. Maybe you or someone you know has felt lonely in the halls of....gulp...high school!

For this writing assignment, I want everyone to watch a Youtube video of a modern day perspective of alienation. This clip is taken from the 2010 movie, Easy A. This movie is essentially about a high school girl desperate to bounce back from a terrible rumor that one of her peers started about her. This clip shows a few attempts from Olive to make things right and escape her feelings of loneliness. View this movie HERE .

Anyone feel sorry for Olive?

-or-

Do you think she deserved the punishment she received?

Sound familiar?

I want everyone to comment on both of these situations. Both of these characters are experiencing alienation and loneliness. Publish your writing assignment as a comment to this blog telling me which leading lady you feel most sorry for -- Hester or Olive. Why do you feel most sorry for the woman you have chosen? If you were a friend to the woman you have chosen, would you have approached your friend about what she done? What would you have said? Please do not add to your classmates' posts or simply agree or disagree with a post. Please address the questions and prompts that I have provided and supply me with your own opinion and ideas.

  2. I feel sorry for Hester more than I do for Olive, because olive committed adultery by acting like she had sex with someone at a party. She also dressed like a hussy when everyone started calling her 'Easy A'. She took it as something to be proud of at first and made herself look more like a hussy. She faked it with a bunch of guys and they went and bragged about it, and she was getting paid for it, kind of like a prostitute. And she also flaunted it like she wanted to be called 'Easy A' or a hussy by how she dressed and presented herself to others.

I feel sorry for Hester because she husband was the one who sent her off to live a better life when he should have thought something could have happened. I don't think Hester meant to do it and get pregnant by that other guy. But they should not hate her for bringing a beautiful, joy from God to this world. Hester didn't flaunt around like she wanted to get it or dress like one. She took her sin with her since no one would forgive her for making a mistake. She went and lived by herself with a baby, in a little cabin and made clothes for a living. Since she is alienated from the town and she can not talk to anyone, the town's people should not give her the dirty looks that they do.

  3. If I had to choose who I would feel more sorry for between Hester and Olive I would have to choose Hester. Hester is in a different time era than Olive was in. I think in that time, they took it more seriously than in today's time era. They lived such a different life then we do. Everything they did was either good or bad and was looked down upon if it was bad. As in this time era you can get away with more now.

If Hester was my friend I definitely would consult her about what she was doing. I would tell her that i was disappointed in her and that there is consequences for your actions. I would tell her that she does have the right to be with whoever she wants to be. Everyone deserves to find love. It wouldn't be right to be miserable for the rest of your life.

  4. I feel more sorry for Hester Prynne, because she did not mean to get pregnant. She loves the guy that she had a baby with and did not love her husband. She did commit a sin, but she did not want to marry the guy she married. In the movie Easy A, Olive started a rumor about herself, she knew that she would get attention and it would not be in a good way. Everything that happens to Olive was her fault so I do not feel sorry for her.

If I were friends with Hester Prynne, I would tell her that she did wrong even if she did not love her husband. But even though all of the things that's happening to her, it is good that she is proud and confident. I'd tell her that she is a good person for taking care of her baby and herself still after everyone hates her. I do not think she deserves what happened. She was a good person and everyone liked her before she had a baby. I do not think that having a baby changed her because she would still be a good person if everyone would forgive her for her mistake.

  5. I feel sorry for Hester Prynne more than Olive, because Hester didn't mean for everything to happen the way it did. However, Olive spread rumors about herself knowing that it would cause a confrontation and she would get attention on purpose. Hester didn't care if she got a lot of attention or not. Hester didn't want to get married because she didn't love him. And when she went on to a new life and found someone that she really loved, and got pregnant. Then people started acting really mean and shunned her all because she accidentally had a child. I don't think she should be alienated because of that.

If I were Hester Prynne's friend I would tell her to follow her heart even if it is in the wrong doing. And you didn't do anything wrong if you got pregnant by a man whom you loved rather than stay with a man you didn't love and be unhappy. She didn't do the wrong thing.

  6. I feel most sorry for Hester Prynne more than Olive in Easy A. The reason Olive isn't as bad because she's only in high school. All she did was act like she had sex with someone. I get that it is hard to be ignored and ridiculed but it isn't as bad as all the stuff Hester has went through. One of the things that were bad for Olive was that everybody wouldn't help her get her life back on track because they don't want to tell the truth.

Some of the many reasons why Hester had way worse than Olive were that she did commit adultery. She also ended up having someone's baby and being forced to take care of it by herself. She also had to stand on some stand all day so that people could ridicule her. She also had to live in some beat up horrible house.

  7. Humans by nature are social beings. From birth, we thrive when we receive attention from others. When individuals are deprived of that interaction, for whatever reason, it never has positive repercussions. I believe that I am more sympathetic towards Hester, simply because she is alone for reasons psychologically out of her control. She became a sinner because of the damage that was done by her husband at a young age. By taking away her innocence, he created an emotional being that felt trapped in her own out-of-control life. When she saw the opportunity to rebel, she took it by having an affair. That, unfortunately, resulted in her having a child in a relationship that also wouldn't ever be stable.

Olive, on the other hand, practically chose to be ostracized for aesthetic reasons. She wanted to be popular, so she got attention by pretending to lose her virginity, then continued to "have sex" with many other people. She deserved for her plan to backfire on her for the fact that she was shallow in her decisions and took her purity for granted, whether she was actually having sex or not. Once peers find any chance to outcast somebody, they will. She should've expected the results she received, and he content with her irreversible choices.

  8. I feel sorry for Hester instead of Olive. Hester is trying to protect the dad of her baby, while Olive just faked sleeping with everyone to become popular. Hester has to live alone for the rest of her life over her being stubborn and trying to be a good person. Unlike Hester, Olive can just admit she was lying about being a hussy.

Hester has screwed up her whole life now unlike Olive. Hester has to deal with everyone stoppuing and starring, or taking about her whenever she walks by. Olive just has drama and it will all blow over in a week or two, but hester has that drama everywhere she goes because people try to make a point about her.

  9. It sucks for Olive more than it dopes for Hester because Olive still has her whole life ahead of her. Olive faked being a hussy though and hester had a baby with someone she actually loves. Hester should not have been punished the way she was because she had a baby with someone she loves. There are worse things that she could be doing. If she is getting punished for having a baby then the man should be getting in trouble because it is his fault just as much hers.

Olive is purposely trying to make people think that she is a hussy because people are making up rumors. She did that to herself so I feel sorry for Hester because she didn't do anything horrible and Olive did it on purpose.

  11. I don't feel sorry for anybody, but I guess I would feel sorry for Hester if I had to choose. She is getting a harder punishment. She should be able to have sex if she wants; it is her own decision and people should not be able to judge them. She isn't a hussy. She wanted to protect her loved one, I would do the same. There should be no punishment. Hester is a good person. Other people can't see her doing the good deeds.

  12. I feel sorry for Hester Prynne. Olive only had the four years of her high school and Hester Prynne had her whole life to wear an 'A' on her. Hester Prynny committed adultery because she was already married. Hester was an adulterer because she had an affair. Olive just wanted attention but ended up being too popular in a bad way.

If I was either of their friends I would ask them why would you do such a thing? And I would tell Hester that she should take her baby and try to talk everything out. If I was Olive's friend, I would not even be around her.

  13. I feel more sorry for Hester Prynne. Hester is publicly humiliated and has to wear an 'A' on her chest. Hester has really no friends and cannot make a living with no one buying her clothes. Hester will soon be broke and will not have any money or food to live on. Olive, on the other hand, just wanted to sleep with everyone to act popular.

I don't feel sorry for Olive at all. All she did was act like a hussy and try to get popular for all the wrong reasons. Hester Prynne, on the other hand, was not trying to get a bad reputation nor think she was a hussy. Hester will have to make a living with the bad ground to grow food and make no money with no one buying her clothes.

  14. I empathize more with Hester than Olive. Unlike Olive, Hester lived in a very strict time and place. Because of her sin she was alienated. I believe Hester was just looking for love after being forced into a loveless relationship at a young age. If I was in Hester's place, I would have struggled with the same thing. Love is important to everyone, whether they admit it or not. Hester also protected the father of her child by not revealing who he was. Hester was all alone and could nothing about it.

Olive, on the other hand, had the situation in her control. She started the rumors about herself. I feel she could have figured out better ways to deal with her problems. Olive was not completely alienated either. She had her family and a few of her friends still. Olive did not have to deal with the rigors of having a child; her wild stories were all fictional and the trials she faced by her own hand. If I was a friend of Olives I would have approached her and tried to convince her that creating a bad reputation is moronic. In Hester's case, I would not approach her, except to offer my help. Having a child a living on your own with no help must be horrible. Everyone deserves a friend.

  15. I feel sorry for Hester because her punishment of alienation was decided by the townspeople, who are Puritans, are only following the rules that are provided by the church. The townspeople believe they are living a way that best suits themselves and their relationship with God. They don't examine a situation properly to find out what is best, or if what Hester had done was actually wrong. Her punishment was severe, due to the era she lived in. In most cases anyone who committed adultery would be sentenced to death. Hester had her sentence changed to only wearing a scarlet letter and being alienated from the town because of her baby. The alienation was devastating because it made her unable to provide herself and child with a proper amount of vegetation for food. Her business as a mistress saw a lower amount of customers and she was treated as if she was worthless.

I do not feel sorry for Olive. The choices she made were on her own, and they were to get the attention of her peers. Her idea wasn't fully thought through and her alienation from her peers should have been expected. She was lying to everyone and didn't have any self-control. Her punishment was what she deserved, it wasn't too severe but it also wasn't light on her. Even after realizing she had made a mistake she didn't reveal her lies to anyone. She kept going despite her better judgement and in high school rumors spread extremely fast. Fortunately for Olive, rumors also end fast and new ones arise. They will forget all about the problems she caused.

  16. I don't feel sorry for either Hester or Olive. The reason is don't feel sorry for Hester because she committed adultery. Another reason I don't feel sorry for her is because she cheated on her husband. I feel that Hester deserved everything that they did to her. If she wanted a child she should have had a child with her husband or married the guy that she did have a child with.

I don't feel sorry for Olive because she made up her own rumor to make herself sound cool. Then she keeps telling lies for other people and making herself look like a hussy. I feel that Olive should have gotten in a lot more trouble than she did because she was a big distraction to all the other students.

  17. I feel most sorry for Hester Prynne because she is just like any other human being. She can't help making mistakes. Sooner or later everyone makes mistakes of some kind. In Hester's case she became pregnant before she was married which in that community. Not everyone can be perfect like they should be but just because she had one mistake doesn't mean she should be shut out from the rest of the town and disliked by them. If everyone was to be shut out if they done something wrong there would be almost everyone becoming an outcast.

I don't feel sorry for Olive because she just went around acting like a hussy which made everyone not like her. She caused all this hate on herself instead of it being just a mistake of a human being. The reason she was hated because she was trying to be a hussy when she really wasn't. Olive only had four years to deal with being hated instead of the rest of her life. Olive wanted to be a slut instead of a mistake.

  18. I feel most sorry for Hester because in her time it was a huge thin that a lot of people looked down upon. She was scheduled for it; she was able to talk to no one and no one would talk to her. Olive was just in just in high school and more than likely something more dramatic would come along soon and everyone would forget about it. Hester had a kid from it; she really did all the things she was accused of and had no way to get out. While Olive was still a virgin and just made up the rumor and in the end people found out the truth so it turned out okay for her.

Olive was tired of being ignored and started the rumor for attention. She was basking in it and loving all of the looks she got from people. She was happy to have people stare at her and want to be with her. Just so she could get more attention, she branded her clothes with an 'A'. Eventually, the rumors started getting worse and she was called dirty and gross. Hester was, on the other hand, stuck with the 'A' on the breast and had a kid to prove that she committed adultery. She hated that she was secluded and everyone was calling her names and hated her. She was humiliated by being up on the scaffold with her infant all day and thought about her sin.

  19. It stinks to be an outcast to others. So, I feel sorry for Olive, because she was talking to a friend and she was over heard by a girl and that didn't like her, so a rumor spread that she was a hussy. The other girl should not of said anything, it's more of her friend's fault for saying something. When nothing ever happened between Olive and her imaginary guy. Then her "friend" went to the side with the girl that didn't like her, so she was completely alone in high school. Once she told her story on a chat site, everyone got to see the truth and everyone knew that she wasn't a hussy.

I don't feel sorry for Hester because she decided to go and sleep with a man, and then was pregnant by him. Hester should have waited for her husband to come and find her and then she could have children with him. I don't feel sorry for her because she did it to herself. I feel sorry for her daughter because she will be known as a child of sin and she will grow up without her father. If Hester wouldn't have cheated on her husband then she wouldn't have to wear the letter 'A' on her dress. So, those are the reasons why I don't feel sorry for her.

  20. I really don't feel sorry for either one of them. I feel this way because they brought it on themselves. But if I had to choose one to feel sorry for it would be Hester since she actually did have sex. I don't feel sorry for the girl in Easy A since she completely brought it on herself by telling everyone she had sex with multiple guys. She really didn't have it that bad. Hester got publicly humiliated and had to wear the 'A' on her clothes. The girl from Easy A did all of it on her own.

Hester definitely has it worse than the girl from Easy A. Hester has to deal with being called names and has to live in a terrible place based on the decisions she has made. And the girl from Easy A could easily get herself out of it by telling everyone the truth. If I was her friend I would explain to her how stupid she is making herself look by telling everyone she is a hussy when she really isn't.

  21. I'm for Hester. I am for Hester because back in her time people and laws were much stricter than they are these days. Today, people commit adultery almost daily and most people just shrug it off. It's such a daily happening these days that it isn't really a big deal anymore. If you're unfaithful to your husband these days, you usually get a divorce and then it's forgotten. Back then, it was a terrible sin to be unfaithful. Hester wasn't a terrible person, because she "sinned". Yes, it is wrong to go against your life partner, but it is also a choice. If Hester wasn't happy with her husband and she cheated and had a baby, I see that more as a personal choice. It shouldn't be punishable because it's her life. For people to relentlessly make her feel terrible, I think it is wrong.

Olive on the other hand, she set herself up for it. She was making herself seem like a hussy for attention. If you're going to purposely put yourself into a situation like that with no good intent, then I have no pity. If you're going to make yourself look like a hussy on purpose, it's guaranteed that people are doing to treat you like one.

  22. I honestly do not feel sorry for either of them. I don't feel sorry for Hester because she committed adultery. I don't feel sorry for Olive either because she brought it on herself.

The reasons why I do not feel sorry for them is because committing adultery isn't right, and you shouldn't do it. Hester had no reason to cheat on her husband. If she wanted to be with another man, she shouldn't have married him. I don't feel sorry for Olive because she made up rumors about herself so people would think she was cool. 23. I feel sorry for Hester Prynne more than Olive. I don't really think Hester Prynne was a hussy. She had one kid with one guy, so that doesn't really make her a hussy in my mind. She was mistreated pretty bad for something that I think wasn't really that big of a deal. If things now were like they used to be there would be a lot of hussies.

I don't feel sorry for Olive at all. She wasn't really a hussy. She was kind of a hussy to me because she was pretending to be one. All she was doing was helping some friends out. In the long run, everyone thought she was a hussy because of all the things she was doing but she really wasn't.

  24. I don't feel sorry for Olive nor Hester because Hester committed adultery and Olive made up rumors and brought it all on herself in the content of starting rumors so people would like her but it actually made her like a hussy.

The reason I do not feel sorry for them is because committing adultery is not good, and you most certainly should not do it. If Hester did not want to be with her husband she should of never married him in the first place. 25. I feel sorry for Hester Prynne more than I do for Olive. Olive chose to make the choices that she did. Olive told her best friend that she had fooled around with another guy and started a rumor about herself. She also started dressing in very revealing clothing. When she dressed like that, she portrayed herself as a hussy. She was also very proud and getting paid for the fake relationships that she had with guys. Olive also didn't keep her fake personal life a secret. She knew everyone was saying those things, and she was happy about it. Until she realized what was really being said about her. If I was Olive's friend, I would have confronted her and asked her why she was doing the things that were being said. I would also help her realize how it all makes her look.

I feel worse for Hester. She was sent away to a town she had never been by her husband who she didn't really love. She was a young, beautiful girl living by herself in a new town. She had no one to talk to after this crime or sin was committed by her. She was alienated and she was without someone by her side to protect her and love her. Hester was also very hurt by the things people said. She didn't want people to think she was a hussy, unlike Olive. She also had to be really strong and listen to all the things she didn't want to be said. So, I feel worse for Hester than I do Olive.

So, Olive wasn't that different from everyone else in her time. Hester just stuck out because she was the only one having sex with a lot of people publicly.

Olive wasn't actually having sex with people, she was just taking money for fake sex. Hester was actually having sex for no apparent reason, other than she simply liked it. I do not feel sorry for Hester. I feel sorry for Olive because she wasn't actually doing it.

  28. I feel sorrier for Hester. Olive was just trying to be noticed by other people. Hester didn't have any intentions behind it. Olive was a hussy by pretending to do stuff with a bunch of guys. Hester just made a mistake. Olive still had some friends she could talk to. Her supposed best friend just left her alone too. Hester had herself and that's it, no one would talk to her. A bunch of people would still talk to Olive if even for the wrong reasons. Hester was just called a hussy for having sex out of wedlock. Hester didn't even want to be married to her old, deformed husband.

Olive is trying to be popular and fit in. Hester is just trying to get by with her punishment. Olive isn't even forced to wear the "A" Hester is forced to wear it. Hester makes the letter elaborate to mock the magistrate. Olive wears to try to stand out. Hester has it so much worse than Olive. Olive still had her parents that she could fall back on. Hester just had her baby that she didn't even really want. Hester is really a hussy though and didn't want to be. Olive wanted to be a hussy.

  29. I don't really feel sorry for either one of them. They are both hussies that like attention. Olive had a rumor started about her, but also helped it along by the way she acted. If she would have just ignored what everyone was saying it would have eventually went away. The reason I don't feel sorry for Olive is because she just helped the fact that people were starting rumors about her.

I don't feel sorry for Hester Prynne because she was married and came to a different town and had a kid with some other guy. If she would have just stayed loyal to her husband this would not have happened. She may not of liked her husband but still she was married so it's still wrong.

  30. I feel most sorry for Hester because she is forced to get married to a man she doesn't even love. She can't grow crops to help her feed her daughter. Everyone thinks she is a hussy because she had a baby. She has to wear an awful letter "A" upon her bosom. To whomever got her pregnant and is making her keep it a secret because they are ashamed of what people may think need to quit being so selfish.

Hester is a very good young woman from what I see in the book. She doesn't deserve to be treated like a terrorist. They make her live out of town and she has to walk a very far walk just to get into town and buy groceries. Hester's job probably stinks as well since the rich people are so mean but she makes them look so beautiful. People need to give her some more respect.

  31. I feel more sorry for Hester. Olive started a bunch of rumors about her being an adulterer. Therefore, she deserved how she was treated. Hester was more alienated by her town. Even though, she pretty much got herself into trouble, she shouldn't have to be stuck all by herself with absolutely nothing. Especially when she has a baby girl she needs to take care of.

If I was either one of these women's friends, I would tell them what they were doing was wrong and quite frankly dumb. Telling everyone you sleep around with almost every guy, really doesn't anyone look "cool". Personally, if I was Hester, I would tell the town that Roger Chillingworth was my husband and that the baby was his. It's still lying, but it'd get her out of punishment.

  32. I feel most sorry for Hester. Olive deserved what happened to her, because she started the rumors herself. Once she knew what everyone else knew about her, sleeping with a college guy, she started dressing inappropriately. Olive enjoyed having the attention from everyone, even though it made her look bad. As long as people were talking about her, she was fine. Hester didn't deserve being alienated at all. Even though she was an adulterer, she was innocent. She didn't even want to get married in the first place. After she moved on to a different life, she moved on to a different guy. She got pregnant by a guy she actually loved, and kept the baby. People treated Hester so much worse than they treated Olive and she didn't deserve it.

If I were Hester's best friend, I would honestly confront her about it. I would tell her that she was doing the wrong thing by being an adulterer, and that wearing the big, fancy "A" to get everyone's attention makes her look bad. She should have at least divorced Roger Chillingworth before getting with another guy. But honestly, Hester has the right to be with whoever she wants to be with, just like everyone else. She doesn't care what people think about her, but she doesn't deserve her punishment.

  33. I feel more sympathy for Hester than I do for Olive. Hester was not willing to marry her husband. She wasn't happy and she didn't want to be with him. Olive, on the other hand, made up lies about herself to get attention. In Easy A, the setting is present day where premarital sex isn't nearly as big of a deal as it was in the time that The Scarlet Letter took place. Hester was humiliated for having sex with a man she wasn't married to because she was living in a place with strict Puritan beliefs. Olive, however, didn't have it as tough as her.

  34. I feel sorry for Olive. High school can be the best four years of your life or it can be the worst years. I couldn't imagine being tormented every day, and all for attention. Even being in a small school makes rumors spread faster. If I was her friend, I would try to talk to her. But I know that if this is what she wanted to do then she wouldn't listen to what I have to say about it but I would still be there for her so when all of this went bad she would have a shoulder to cry on.

I feel sorry for Hester because she was forced to wear the "A" for her whole life over a little mistake.

  35. I feel sorry for Hester more than Olive because told a lie about herself and that's why the rumors started about her. Hester just had a baby and that's why she was condemned. Hester was punished too severely for what she did. Olive faked having sex with a bunch of guys to become more popular. She went around and dresses like a hussy and didn't tell everyone it was a lie. Hester was in a forced marriage that she didn't want to be in.

If I was Olive's best friend I would confront her and ask why she was running around being a hussy. I would try to convince her to tell the truth and go back to the why she was. I would have helped her become normal again. I would go and tell people the truth and try to stop the rumors.
